In this episode, I share the story of how I got started in my book publishing/writing career. It all began with a song. I wrote a song, which, through the prompting of my mother, was developed into my first book. In the podcast, I promised to share with you the lyrics of that song, and they’ll be at the end of the show notes.
That first book I wrote is titled, The Prodigal Daughter: Hope for Runaway Christians and Those Who Await Their Return
Ruled by despair, remorse and anger, author Linda Fulkerson’s life had become a classic rendition of the cliche, “What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?” Desperate. Overwhelmed. Isolated. Trapped. She hit bottom.
On the elevator of life, those descending will all exit on different levels – some much lower than others. You don’t have to go all the way to the basement! Stop now and push the “up” button. This book will show you how.
The Prodigal Daughter offers practical suggestions to:
– Renew hope
– Realize God’s love
– Regain peace
– Reconcile relationships
– Return home
Where to buy The Prodigal Daughter:
- Kindle Edition
- Paperback Edition (used copies only – this book is currently out of print, but I plan to re-release it soon.)
I mentioned briefly my first foray into fiction, which was not that great. But, my daughter loves this book and claims it’s not that bad. Anyway, if you’d like to read my first attempt at fiction, the book is titled Wings of the Dawn.
Anna Jamison, an orphan forced to choose between her dream and her duty, and Nathan Adams, a sworn-off women frontiersman who must now vow to protect one in order to free himself from a blackmailer’s web, struggle against adversaries, forces of nature, wavering faith, but most of all, each other, along the treacherous 1849 trek from Missouri to California’s gold territory.
Setting: California Trail, 1849
Hero/Heroine: Anna Jamison and Nathan Adams
Theme: God is Always with Us
Theme Scripture: Psalm 139:7-10

And, the last book I discussed in this podcast episode was Dead Broke, a murder mystery.
Sports photographer Andrea “Andy” Warren, whose faith has dipped to the same depths as her checkbook balance, receives a phone call that forces her return to the Arkansas hometown she renounced, where she hopes to avoid her meddling mother, her ex-fiancé, and the local sheriff.
Upon her arrival, she soon discovers a series of changes in the “never-changing” community. A handsome stranger has arrived, a festival is in the works, and a person she desperately needs is dead.
When her estranged brother is charged with the crime, he begs Andy to find the true killer.
Will Andy amateur sleuth skills be adequate to find the murderer? Or will she become the next victim?

Here are the lyrics to the song, “The Prodigal Daughter”:
“The Prodigal Daughter”
Words and music by Linda L. Fulkerson ©1999
First Verse:
Born the first child of a preacher
In the heart of the Bible belt.
She was the apple of her daddy’s eye
More joy he’d never felt.
As he held close his little baby
He said, “Honey I love you so,
And I vow to the Lord to train you
In the paths that you should go.”
Chorus:
And he taught her love thy neighbor.
And he taught her trust in God.
He said, “You know, he’ll always love you
No matter where your footsteps trod.
There’s not a thing in the depths of the ocean
Or in the heavens up above,
No, neither life nor death nor angels
Can come between you and God’s love.”
Second Verse:
On a barstool sits a drunkard
Far away from the Bible belt.
Spent a life of sin and squandering
More shame, she’d never felt.
So she trudged down the street to a lonely room,
From a desk drawer pulled a gun.
And her tears rolled down with the memories
Of her childhood days of fun.
Final Verse:
At the altar kneels a preacher
In a church in the Bible belt.
And he pleads and he prays for his little girl,
More love he’d never felt.
It’d been two years since he’d seen her.
He wondered where she might have gone,
When a voice behind him whispered,
“Daddy, I’ve come home.
Final chorus:
Because you taught me love thy neighbor
And you taught me trust in God
You said, “You know he’ll always love you
No matter where your footsteps trod.”
There’s not a thing in the depths of the ocean
Or in the heavens up above,
For neither life, nor death, nor angels
Can come between me and God’s love.
(Repeat last 2 lines.)
